Guelph has a good number of licensed cannabis stores, and shopping at one is simple once you know the rules. This guide covers how to check that a store is legal, what ID to bring, and how in-store shopping, pickup and delivery work in Guelph and the nearby towns of Fergus, Elora and Rockwood.
We’re Pure North Cannabis Co., a licensed cannabis store at 783 Woolwich St in Guelph. Everything below applies to any legal store in Ontario, and at the end we cover how it works with us.
How to tell a Guelph cannabis store is licensed
In Ontario, private cannabis stores are licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). Every legal store buys its products from the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS), the province’s only legal wholesaler.
Three quick checks:
- The AGCO list. The AGCO publishes a map and list of authorized cannabis stores. If a store isn’t on it, it isn’t legal.
- The retail seal. Authorized stores display the AGCO’s cannabis retail seal at the door and on their website.
- The excise stamp. Every legal cannabis package carries a federal excise stamp. Products from licensed stores always have one.
Unlicensed sellers sometimes advertise online or by text. Their products aren’t tested or tracked the way legal products are, so it’s worth the 30-second check.
ID and age rules in Ontario
You must be 19 or older to enter a cannabis store or buy cannabis in Ontario. Stores check government-issued photo ID at the door, and delivery drivers check it again at your door.
At Pure North we accept:
- Ontario driver’s licence
- Ontario Photo Card
- Canadian passport
- Canadian citizenship card
- Canadian Armed Forces ID card
- Certificate of Indian Status card
- Permanent resident card
Expired ID and photos of ID can’t be accepted.
In-store, pickup or delivery
Most licensed stores in Guelph offer three ways to buy. Which one fits depends on how much time you have.
- In-store: walk in, browse, ask a budtender and pay at the counter. Bring photo ID. Staff can explain product formats and potency labels.
- Order ahead, pick up: order on the store’s online menu, then collect in store. Same ID check at pickup.
- Delivery: order online and a store driver brings it to your door. Delivery windows, minimums and areas vary by store. Photo ID is checked at the door.
In Ontario, only licensed stores and the Ontario Cannabis Store can legally deliver cannabis.
