Pre-Roll Sizes and Formats Explained: Singles, Packs, Blunts and Infused

Table of Contents

Pre-rolls are one of the most popular formats at our Guelph store, and the shelf can look confusing at first: singles, 2-packs, 10-packs, half grams, full grams, blunts and infused pre-rolls. This guide explains what those formats mean, how to read a pre-roll label, and how to compare packs so you can pick the format that suits you. It covers formats only. You must be 19 or older to buy cannabis in Ontario.

What is a pre-roll?

A pre-roll is dried cannabis flower that a licensed producer has ground and rolled in paper for you, sealed in a child-resistant package. In Ontario, every pre-roll sold in a licensed store comes from a licensed producer through the Ontario Cannabis Store, and each package carries the product’s THC and CBD content, the package date and the producer’s details on the label.

Pre-roll sizes: 0.35 g to 2 g and beyond

Pre-rolls are sold by the weight of cannabis in each one. These are the sizes you will see on our pre-roll menu:

  • 0.35 g and 0.4 g: small, slim pre-rolls, usually sold in packs of 10.
  • 0.5 g: the most common size. Sold as singles and in packs of 4, 5 or 10.
  • 1 g: a full gram, sold as singles and 2-packs.
  • 2 g and larger: large-format pre-rolls, sold one per package. Some producers make even larger single pre-rolls, such as a 7 g format.

The size is printed on the package as a count and a weight, for example 10×0.5g (ten pre-rolls of half a gram each, 5 g in total) or 2x1g (two pre-rolls of one gram each, 2 g in total).

Singles vs multi-packs

A single is one pre-roll in its own tube. Singles are a simple way to try a strain or a producer before buying more. A multi-pack holds several pre-rolls of the same product, commonly 2, 4, 5 or 10. To compare packs fairly, multiply the count by the weight to get the total grams, then compare the price per gram on the menu. A 10×0.35g pack (3.5 g) and a 5×0.5g pack (2.5 g) look similar on the shelf but hold different amounts of cannabis.

Blunts

Some pre-rolls are labelled blunt. In Canada, these are rolled in a tobacco-free wrap, since legal cannabis products cannot contain tobacco. They are usually thicker than paper pre-rolls, and the wrap material is listed on the package.

Regular vs infused pre-rolls

A regular pre-roll contains dried flower only. An infused pre-roll has a cannabis extract added to the flower, such as distillate or another concentrate, sometimes coated on the outside. Their labels show the THC and CBD of the whole product, including the added extract. Always read the label before buying, and ask our team if anything on it is unclear. You can see what we have in stock on our online menu.

How to read a pre-roll label

  • Count and weight: how many pre-rolls are in the package and how much each one weighs.
  • THC and CBD: the potency panel shows how much THC and CBD the product contains.
  • Strain and type: the cultivar name and whether the producer lists it as indica, sativa or hybrid.
  • Package date: the date the product was packaged. Many shoppers prefer a recent date.
  • Producer: the licensed producer who grew and packaged the product.

How much can you buy at once?

In Ontario, adults can buy or carry up to 30 g of dried cannabis, or its equivalent, at a time. A 10×0.5g pack counts as 5 g toward that total. Our team and our online checkout keep orders within the limit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common pre-roll size?

The 0.5 g pre-roll is the most common size, sold as singles and in packs of 4, 5 or 10. Full-gram pre-rolls are also widely available.

What does 10×0.5g mean on a pre-roll pack?

It means the pack holds ten pre-rolls of 0.5 g each, for 5 g of cannabis in total.

What is the difference between infused and regular pre-rolls?

Regular pre-rolls contain dried flower only. Infused pre-rolls also contain an added cannabis extract, and the label shows the THC and CBD of the whole product.

Do blunts in Ontario contain tobacco?

No. Legal cannabis products in Canada cannot contain tobacco, so blunts sold in licensed stores use tobacco-free wraps.
